A New Avenue

Each year, many women are murdered by their abusive spouses. Sometimes we hear about it in the news, but more often than not, these cases go unrecognized by the general public.

Vida Vistro
was a woman that was full of life, a vivacious spirit.

She touched all those around her in a positive way, and was adored by her young children.

She worked hard and was highly succesful in her career, creating friendships and long term relationships with her co-workers and employer. She had a caring family and a good support network.

I had the pleasure of knowing her for a brief time... long enough for me to be touched by her sincerity and kindness.

In 2005, due to a domestic violence situation, Vida's life was taken from her, and all of us.
After getting over the shock of what happened to her, our ANA community decided to take action.

We expanded our forums to include domestic violence topics, and started reaching out to more women through opening local chapters and having face-to-face contact with more women who needed strong support.

When you join A New Avenue you become a part of a large and wonderful group of women who mentor, encourage and support one another by coming together to share their own experiences. Our mission is to provide each other with unconditional, long-term support and education through personal growth and positive change.

By staying in touch with one another, by listening, encouraging and supporting, the women of ANA give each other time to focus on, and remember, who we are and who we want to become.

A New Avenue began 4 years ago as an online message forum for women going through a transitional period in their lives, mainly for those ending an unhealthy relationship. Since then we've expanded include topics such as developing a life strategy, improving communication, working through abandonment issues, and making better choices in our lives. Today we have over 300 women involved in our network.

I don't usually reserve space on our homepage to do this, but I'd like to take the time to share with you some information on a friend of mine that can really use your help.

Sherrlyn is a wedding photographer and photojournalist from Eugene, Oregon.

She takes most of the money she makes (she lives in a modest one room apartment and drives an old car) and spends it on things like:

- travelling to
South America to investigate the prison system's treatment of mentally ill women

- going to
Iraq and immersing herself in the culture there in the middle of a war, to communicate with the women there on both sides of the conflict

- going to the
Congo (where she is now) to help us understand what is going on there from a 1st person view and bring us information on what we can do to help this humanitarian and political tragedy that is unfolding.

Sherrlyn is
passionate about what she does, and puts her life on the line every day that she is pursuing her mission in life.

Please consider visiting her blog and making a contribution to Sherrlyn's cause. You'll need to scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the PayPal button.
